Suez, an Egyptian city, capital of the Suez Governorate, lies at the head of the Gulf of Suez; It is the largest Egyptian city on the Red Sea. The Suez Canal is named after the city.
In the past, it was called al-Qulzum. It is located east of the Nile River Delta at the southern entrance to the Suez Canal. It is bordered by the governorate of Ismailia in the north, in the east by South Sinai, and in the west by Cairo. There are three ports in Suez Governorate, namely Adabiya Port, Suez Port and Sokhna Port, where an oil refinery and petrochemical plants are connected to Cairo and then to the Mediterranean Sea via the SUMED pipeline.
